National human rights institutions (NHRIs) constitute a fundamental pillar of national human rights protection systems, and are seen as a key mechanism to contribute to the application of international human rights standards. Support for the establishment and strengthening of NHRIs as Paris Principle-compliant national institutions has been an important element of OHCHR country engagement strategy as well as a mandated activity provided for by UN General Assembly and UN Human Rights Council resolutions.
