Uitto, Director of the [Independent Evaluation Office of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)] Established 25 years ago, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) works with partners to protect the global commons and to tackle the biggest environmental challenges facing humankind. An essential part of the GEF four-year replenishment cycle is the comprehensive evaluation known as OPS. The sixth comprehensive evaluation currently underway contains some twenty evaluations and sub-studies focusing on GEF performance, results, and organizational and institutional issues. The Independent Evaluation Office of the GEF uses multiple approaches and methods ranging from quantitative to qualitative in the evaluation. A systems perspective is taken to situate GEF interventions in the broader landscape. Key component evaluations focus on multiple benefits and programmatic approaches, including the Integrated Program Pilots introduced in the GEF6 period. Methodological innovations include the use of geospatial information, rapid impact evaluation, and value-for-money analyses to determine the impact of the GEF.
