Overview

The UNEG Data and AI Working Group (WG), formed in 2023, is focused on advancing the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging data technologies in UN evaluations. This initiative is driven by the rapid rise of Generative AI, which presents both opportunities and risks for UN evaluations.

The WG facilitates the exchange of knowledge and resources among UNEG agencies, fostering collaboration and shared learning on data and ethical AI use in evaluations. By bringing together experts from within the UN and outside, the group aims to leverage AI's potential to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of UN evaluations while ensuring responsible and ethical use of this latest technology.

A key output of the WG is a paper on ethical principles for AI use in evaluations (to be released in early 2025). This document will provide guidance and support to UN agencies navigating the complexities of integrating AI into their evaluation processes in an ethical way.

The WG actively collaborates with other UNEG groups to promote the responsible use of AI across the UN evaluation landscape and across various evaluation exercises. This collaborative approach ensures that AI integration in UN evaluation functions aligns with broader UN goals and values.

Currently co-coordinated by UNICEF, UNFPA, and UNDP, the WG comprises over 53 members from 21 agencies, reflecting a wide commitment among UNEG members to exploring and harnessing the potential of responsible AI use in UN evaluations.
